Artist's Comments

Media: Mixed: Solvent transfer, oil, on wood
Dimensions: 11 x 14"
Date of Work: 9/2005

This was inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe. His entire catalog of work informs this piece, as opposed to a single poem or story.

Process: Shown is the digital portion of this image, which was created in Photoshop and Painter. It is a combination of photomanipulation and digital painting.

Credits for stock include the lovely Lockstock [link]

as well as [link]

The digital image is transferred to a maple substrate with solvent, then additional painting and varnishing takes place.

Longing and lost love, distorted reality and the weight of sadness are all themes that speak to me in Poe's work. It is my intent to convey these moods visually within an atmosphere reminiscent of the period in which Poe lived, and of his stories and poetry, some of which can indeed be considered both frightening and bleak.

"From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were--I have not seen
As others saw--I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone.
Then--in my childhood--in the dawn
Of a most stormy life--was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, of the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold--
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by--
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view."

~Edgar Allen Poe

O_O Oh my, this is perfect... I was staring at it for long while. I like her standing in "distorted lane..." and of course I like Poe, this suits perfectly. *thumbs up* +fav

That's gorgeous, Cel! So glad to see something new from you :) Last I remember you were getting ready to go back to school; how's that going? Hope your gallery is coming along, too! Don't be such a stranger, some of us miss our Cel fixes ya know ;)

Thanks so much Eve :) I am indeed back in school and life is busy. This semester I am taking Modern Art History, Painting (oil), Video Art, Drawing Applications, and Print. Pretty long classes with lots of labs as well. Well not as bad as Sculpture, which has a req of 8-10 lab hours a week for that class alone.
And my studio is great, still not completely organized, but I am out of the smaller one and into the larger one.

I am probably most active on my blog and been trying to add stuff as I go to my new site (all of which ya can get to from celstudios.net), and trying to spend time on creating, rather than surfing hehe. Hope you are well!

So glad to hear you're doing so well hon! *hugs* My life been a lil chaotic around here too because my lil one just started Kindergarten a couple weeks ago. Artwise myself, I've pretty much left most SS work behind and started doing stuff with Poser. It took a lil getting used to, but I'm loving it now. I'll be sure to swing by your site later and try to keep a closer eye on you ;) You never fail to make me go O.O lol. Be good sweetie!
